Iran Demands Liberation of Palestinian Inmate on Hunger Strike
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Israeli “occupiers” must release Maher al-Akhras, a Palestinian man on hunger strike for 85 days since his arrest by the Zionist regime.
In a post on its Twitter account on Sunday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry lashed out at the Israeli regime for keeping Maher al-Akhras in prison for three months without any charges.
Despite his hunger strike and international outcry, the Israeli regime has refused to end the unjustified detention of Akhras, the ministry added.
“The occupiers must end arbitrary detentions and free him and 100s of Palestinians unjustly held,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in the tweet.
Akhras, 49, was arrested near Nablus and placed in administrative detention, a policy that the Israeli regime uses to hold suspected armed people without charge.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday that Akhras is entering a medically “critical phase”.
The father of six launched his hunger strike to protest the Israeli policies. He had been arrested several times previously by Zionists.
Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip have launched several demonstrations to demand the release of Akhras. They have also organized sit-ins and online campaigns to show their support for him.
