Biden’s Admin Not to Lift Sanctions on Iran: Ex-Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A former Iranian ambassador to Germany said the stances adopted by the US’ Democratic party indicate that the administration of president-elect Joe Biden is not going to remove the sanctions against Iran.

In an interview with Tasnim, Alireza Sheikh Attar dismissed speculation that the next US administration may remove the sanctions that Donald Trump’s administration has imposed on the Islamic Republic.

“I have no doubt that the (US) sanctions (on Iran) are not going to be terminated,” the former ambassador added.

Sheikh Attar said a review of the speeches made by Joe Biden and the stances adopted by the Democrats on Iran indicates that they do not disagree about imposing sanctions on Iran at all.

The reason that Democrats criticize Trump for scrapping the 2015 Iran nuclear deal is that Washington’s withdrawal from the JCPOA has separated the US from its allies, the Iranian diplomat added.

In remarks on Monday, Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri tamped down expectations on a change in the US government’s policies towards Iran under the next administration, saying a Democratic president taking office at the White House does not mean a shift in Washington’s major policies on the Iranian nation.
