Iranian Photojournalists Honored by UNICEF

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Two Iranian photographers working for the Tasnim News Agency were awarded “honorable mentions” by the United Nations Children's Fund in the ‘UNICEF Photo of the Year’ contest.

Since 2000, the UNICEF office in Germany has held annual contests to present photographers with the “UNICEF Photo of the Year Award”.

The award goes to the photos depicting the personality and living conditions of children worldwide in an outstanding manner.

This year’s award went to Greek photographer Angelos Tzortzinis for a photo of refugees on the Lesbos island.

In addition to the top prize, the independent jury also awarded seven honorable mentions, including two photos from the Iranian photojournalists.

Hamed Malekpour and Erfan Kouchari, both working at the Tasnim News Agency’s central office in Tehran, are among the honorable mentions 2020.

Malekpour has captured the “fate of two children and their families in images of great sorrow and equally great relief,” UNICEF Germany said, citing the story of an organ donation process involving two kids.

The photo series taken by Kouchari “shows how the children escape onto the flat roofs of their houses, how they use these spaces to play, skate, fly kites, do gymnastics, build tents or plant gardens” amid the coronavirus pandemic and consequent restrictions.
