Iran’s Vafaei Beats World No. 1 Trump at Welsh Open Snooker

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Hossein Vafaei of Iran defeated world number one Judd Trump 4-2 on Thursday at the Welsh Open Snooker 2021.

The 2019 world champion Trump had led 2-1 following runs of 51 and 53, but struggled for fluency and fell to a shock defeat to Vafaei.

However, having secured one of the required two, a loose safety allowed Vafaei in to seal the match and condemn Trump to a first defeat in a best-of-seven match since 2019.

Vafaei had previously defeated Englishman Peter Lines (4-2) and Xintong Zhao from China (4-3).

The 2021 Welsh Open is an ongoing professional ranking snooker tournament, taking place from February 15 to 21, 2021 at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales.

The event's total prize fund is £405,000, with the winner receiving £70,000.
