Iran’s Top General Condoles Iraq after Deadly Hospital Fire

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri offered his condolences to Iraq over deaths in a recent fire that broke out in the coronavirus intensive care unit of a Baghdad hospital.

The senior Iranian commander sent a letter of condolences to Iraqi Joint Headquarters Chief of Staff General Abdul Amir Rasheed Yarallah, saying he was deeply saddened by the news of deaths of Iraqi people in the hospital fire.

Major General Baqeri also offered his condolences to the Iraqi military forces, the Popular Mobilization Units (Hashd al-Shaabi), the government, and the Muslim people of Iraq.

He furtehr expressed deep sympathy with the bereaved families of victims of the incident.

At least 82 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a fire that broke out in the coronavirus intensive care unit of the Ibn al-Khatib Hospital in Baghdad.

The blaze on Saturday night at the hospital was sparked by an accident that caused an oxygen tank to explode, according to medical sources.

In response to the fire, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi suspended Health Minister Hassan al-Tamimi amid angry calls on social media for him to be sacked, as part of a probe that would also include the governor of Baghdad.
