Envoy: Iran Backs Push to End War in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran would support any effort to end the war in Afghanistan and protect the rights of Afghan citizens, the Iranian Foreign Ministry's special envoy for Afghanistan said.

In a meeting with Chairman of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) Abdullah Abdullah, held in Kabul on Monday, Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian reaffirmed Iran’s support for peace efforts in Afghanistan and plans to end the war in the neighboring state.

He also voiced Tehran’s support for any initiative safeguarding the rights of all Afghan people.

Taherian further condemned the recent deadly terrorist attack on a school in Kabul, saying the time has come to put an end to war and bloodshed in Afghanistan.

In another meeting, the Iranian envoy held talks with Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Mohammad Hanif Atmar about the Afghan peace process and the ways to promote regional cooperation between Tehran and Kabul.

Iranian officials maintain that the intra-Afghan negotiations should include all Afghan groups and be held in accordance with the Constitution of Afghanistan.
