Iranian, Yemeni Diplomats Discuss Peace Process in Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior Assistant to Iranian Foreign Minister in Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji and Deputy Foreign Minister of Yemen’s National Salvation Government Hussein al-Azzi exchanged views on plans to facilitate the peace negotiations in Yemen.

In a video call on Wednesday, Khaji and Azzi discussed the latest developments in Yemen, the cooperation to contribute to the peace negotiations in the Arab country, and the results of talks about the fate of Safer ship, an oil tanker that has been stranded near the port city of Hudaydah for a long time.

Praising Iran for its support for the Yemeni nation, Azzi stressed the need for constant coordination and consultations between Tehran and Sana’a.

For his part, Khaji expounded on Iran’s views about the peace process in Yemen and ways to expedite the negotiations about lifting the blockade on Yemen, establishing peace, and addressing the crisis surrounding the Safer fuel tanker.

The UN has warned the Safer, stranded since 2015, could spill four times as much oil as the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster near Alaska, but access to the vessel has been complicated by the war in Yemen.

The Safer, built in 1974, is moored off the Ras Issa oil terminal, 60km (40 miles) north of the key port of Hudaydah.
