Iran Rejects Canadian Court Ruling on Ukrainian Plane Crash
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh rejected a recent ruling by a Canadian court on the January 2020 crash of a Ukrainian plane in Tehran, saying the court has no jurisdiction over the case.
Everyone is aware that the Canadian court basically has no jurisdiction over this air crash or any possible failure in an incident that has occurred outside Canada, Khatibzadeh said on Friday after being asked by reporters about the ruling.
He added that given Ottawa’s conduct and behavior regarding this case so far, it was predictable that Canada would disregard the basic and fundamental legal principles.
The spokesman described Canada’s moves on the case, including the recent court ruling, as politically motivated and unacceptable and said they would be to the detriment of all sides.
He again expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the crash and called on the Canadian government to act maturely and based on known international regulations and respect for principles.
On Thursday, a court in Canada’s Ontario ruled that Iran was responsible for the crash of the Ukrainian passenger plane in January 2020.
The Kiev-bound UIA Boeing 737 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran on January 8, 2020, killing all 176 people on board, mostly Iranian and Canadian citizens.
Iran said the plane was hit by an anti-aircraft missile due to human error.
