TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A ransacked commercial center in Soweto, a township on the outskirts of Johannesburg, called in firefighters, police officers, and military on Tuesday.

South Africa has seen its fifth day of consecutive violence by protesters, which started as former president Jacob Zuma was charged with crimes related to corruption last week.

In Soweto, malls and shops have been totally plundered by looters, with local business owners left devastated by the damage.

Violent protests have spread across South Africa, following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma last Wednesday. The death toll rose to 72 as of Tuesday, according to police.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in jail for contempt of court, after failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency. His legal team hope to reduce his sentence in the Constitutional Court.
