In a statement on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh condemned the recent attack by armed groups in Burkina Faso that has claimed 41 lives.
He also expressed sympathy with the government and people of Burkina Faso and the families of victims of the attack.
The Iranian spokesman also slammed the “benefits that certain countries get from insecurity and instability” as the root cause of spread of terrorist groups in that region.
The government of Burkina Faso announced that 41 people had died in the attack that took place on Thursday.
The government said the dead included members of a government-backed civilian self-defense force known as the Volunteers for the Defense of the Motherland (VDP), set up to support the army.
According to local media, the ambush targeted a convoy of traders escorted by VDP near Ouahigouya, a town not far from the Mali border.
Armed groups have driven religious and ethnic tensions between farming and herding communities in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to boost recruitment among marginalized communities.
