Iraq Opposed to Intimidation, Sanctions against Nations: Top MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi called for collective action to prevent sanctions and intimidation against sovereign states, saying Baghdad is pushing for proxy diplomacy to resolve regional tensions and encourage negotiations for reconciliation between neighbors.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart in Tehran on Wednesday, the Iraqi parliament speaker said, “We should not allow nations to be targeted by sanctions and intimidation and should not allow  armed groups to take action against countries.”

Calling for an end to the violation of the sovereignty of nations and for the removal of obstacles to the development of countries, Halbousi expressed hope that closer relations between Baghdad and Tehran would serve the interests of the two nations.

“Stability in Iran has a positive impact on Iraq and the region, in the same way that stability in Iraq would affect Iran and the region,” he added.

Highlighting Iraq’s push for proxy diplomacy in order to settle regional problems, Halbousi described negotiations, understanding and consultations as the solution to the problems between the neighbors.

“The regional countries should adopt common stances in international bodies, because we face common challenges. Calm and stability must return to the region,” he stated.

For his part, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said the Iranian Parliament’s policy is based on the expansion of relations with neighboring and regional countries.

Stressing the need for the enhancement of political, economic and cultural ties between Tehran and Baghdad, Qalibaf said Iran also eyes cooperation with Iraq in the environmental sector.

“The strong bilateral ties between Iran and Iraq are influential at the regional and international levels,” he added.

Qalibaf also noted that Iran requests the Iraqi government and parliament to allow for the reopening of the land routes to Iranian pilgrims intending to visit the neighboring country in the Arbaeen season.
