Referendum Key to Ending Occupation of Palestine: Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian described a referendum in Palestine as the solution to ending the Zionist regime’s occupation and resolving the long-running dispute in West Asia.

The top Iranian diplomat made the comment at a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement member states, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday.

Amirabdollahian said the Palestinian people, in the wake of silence by the international community, are facing inhumane conditions caused by the Israeli occupation and the regime’s aggression and expansionism.

He also denounced the apartheid Zionist regime for increasingly violating the basic rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to live and work.

Criticizing the Israeli regime for expanding its settlements on occupied Palestinian land, Amirabdollahian said the Palestinians are incarcerated and forced to migrate, while their lands are confiscated and their farmland are destroyed.

He also referred to the growing condemnation of the Israeli regime by key international human rights organizations in recent years, which have described Israel as an apartheid regime.

The Iranian foreign minister then called on the Non-Aligned Movement to use its diplomatic capacities to help stop the inhumane measures and crimes by the occupying Israeli regime against the Palestinian people.

Today the Palestinian youth are not hopeful about initiatives presented by certain countries and international organizations to help resolve the conflict with the Zionist regime, he added, noting that all of those initiatives have reached a deadlock since they have failed to address the root cause of the crisis.

Amirabdollahian explained that Iran, back in November 1, 2019, presented its own initiative to the United Nations, which calls for a national referendum in Palestine.

Iran believes that the democratic solution will help resolve the issue of the occupation and the long-running dispute in the West Asia region, and that the real residents of Palestine, including Muslims, Christians and Jews, can decide their fate and determine their government, he explained, IRNA reported.
