Iran to Support Efforts for Security of Africa: FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian highlighted the Islamic Republic's support for efforts to uphold peace and security in Africa during a meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani in Nouakchott.

Amirabdollahian held constructive talks with the Mauritanian president and with Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug during a visit to the country’s capital city, Nouakchott.

They discussed a range of bilateral, regional and international issues during the meetings.

The Iranian top diplomat praised the efforts of the Mauritanian president in fighting terrorism and promoting peace and security in the Western Sahara region, calling it highly significant.

During the meeting, which was focused on various areas of cooperation, including technology, culture, economy, commerce, and regional and international developments, Amirabdollahian conveyed greetings from Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Ould Ghazouani.

The two sides also discussed important regional issues, such as supporting the Palestinian cause and strengthening ties among Muslim nations.

They also exchanged view about the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Ghazouani referred to the relations between Iran and Mauritania as historical and solid, and praised the role of Iran in the fight against terrorism. He also highlighted the industrial, scientific, and technological advancements in Iran and stressed the importance of further developing the relationship between the two countries.

In a statement to reporters after the meeting, Amirabdollahian expressed his gratitude to the president of Mauritania for his valuable efforts in promoting stability and security in the Western Sahara, and for supporting the fight against terrorism. He emphasized Iran's commitment to this cause, as it continues to lead the fight against terrorism and support actions that contribute to a safe and peaceful African continent.

Amirabdollahian arrived in Nouakchott on Tuesday morning, leading a high-ranking political delegation.
