Iran Army Unveils New Chopper Accessories

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Army Ground Force unveiled a series of homegrown equipment for the helicopters of its airborne division, including radar jamming systems and missile warning receivers.

The Iranian Army Ground Force’s Airborne Division on Sunday inaugurated a museum of its achievements and operations during the Iraqi-imposed war of the 1980s.

A number of self-protection systems for helicopters, manufactured inside Iran, were unveiled on the sidelines of the opening of the museum.

Commander of the Army Ground Force’s Airborne Division General Yousef Qorbani said at least 40 choppers have been equipped with chaff and flare countermeasure systems.

Chaff is a radar countermeasure in which the helicopter spreads a cloud of small objects that appear as a cluster of targets on radar screens in order to confuse and distract. A flare is also an aerial infrared countermeasure used by a helicopter to counter a heat-seeking missile.

Among the items that were unveiled in Sunday’s event were a laser missile warning system and an infrared (thermal) jamming system.

The homegrown countermeasure systems warn the helicopter’s pilot about laser-guided or infrared missile lock, allowing for a timely reaction with the use of chaff and flare systems to divert the enemy’s missiles.

In 2018, the Ground Force’s Airborne Division launched a program to equip all choppers with night-vision cameras to enhance aircraft capabilities in night missions.

The Iranian Army says it has the most powerful fleet of choppers in the Middle East.
