Iran-Russia Defense Ties Not Against Anybody: Amirabdollahian

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian underlined that the defense cooperation between Tehran and Moscow does not pose any threat to any country, dismissing concerns from the US.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Moscow on Tuesday night, the top Iranian diplomat expounded on the issues he will discuss with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday.

Asked about the expression of concern from the US officials about the military interaction between Iran and Russia, Amirabdollahian said the defense cooperation between Tehran and Moscow is naturally one of the topics on the agenda of mutual interaction.

The defense cooperation between Iran and Russia will not be against any side, the foreign minister underscored.

He further pointed to the US sanctions as a “failed policy”, saying one of the senior former American officials have admitted to the failure of sanctions.

“We believe that sanction is an economic terrorist instrument against the nations, but the Islamic Republic has managed the situation and has made the most of the opportunity of sanctions for progress in the country,” Amirabdollahian stated.

“The (US) policy of sanctions is inefficient, incorrect and a terrorist war against the nations,” he added.

Hailing the positive trend in economic cooperation between Iran and Russia, Amirabdollahian said the volume of bilateral trade exchanges has increased by more than 3.5 times during the past year and a half.

The Iranian foreign minister also noted that he and his Russian counterpart are going to discuss the regional and international issues, the regional crises, the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the return of all parties to their commitments under the nuclear deal.
