Iran, Azerbaijan Republic Forge Constructive Cooperation: Iranian FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his counterpart from the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov exchanging views on crucial matters concerning bilateral cooperation and regional affairs during a phone call on Thursday.

Amirabdollahian remarked that Iran and Republic of Azerbaijan are currently treading a positive path of constructive cooperation, emphasizing the success of the recent meeting between Iranian and Azerbaijani delegates in the framework of the joint intergovernmental economic commission between the two countries. The meeting, which took place in the Iranian border city of Astara on July 17, resulted in significant agreements regarding rail and road routes.

Additionally, Amirabdollahian condemned the recent acts of desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark, stating that he will once again denounce these heinous actions during an upcoming virtual meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation scheduled for Monday.

Bayramov acknowledged the importance of Amirabdollahian's recent visit to Baku, expressing optimism about the positive effects it will have on the relations between Iran and Azerbaijan in a short time. He also conveyed gratitude to Tehran for its constructive approach toward the Karabakh region.

The disputed Karabakh region has been a source of animosity between Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, with the 2020 Karabakh war resulting in significant casualties on both sides. A Russian-brokered deal led to the end of the conflict, with Yerevan ceding territories it had held for three decades.

Bayramov updated Amirabdollahian on the ongoing negotiations between Baku and Yerevan concerning the disputed region and the Lachin corridor, which is a vital mountain road connecting Armenia and Karabakh through Azerbaijani territory.

Both diplomats stressed the importance of resolving regional issues through the cooperation of regional countries and forces, denouncing foreign interference in the region as non-constructive.
