Iran Blasts Sweden for Inaction on Insult to Quran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Foreign Ministry of Iran slammed the Swedish government and police forces for their passive response to the repeated acts of desecration of the Holy Quran, reminding Stockholm that actions speak louder than words.

In a statement released on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani strongly condemned the most recent case of desecration of the holy book of Muslims in Sweden.

The latest case of Quran burning that took place in Malmo left a new stain on the dark record of Sweden in giving the green light to the sacrilegious acts against Muslims.

In an incident on Saturday, Salwan Momika, a notorious man of Iraqi origin, attempted to desecrate the Holy Quran under police protection in the Lorensborgstorget area of Malmo. Three people who intervened to prevent the act were detained by the Swedish law enforcement. After the incident, Momika left the scene, escorted by a significant police presence.

In his statement, Kanaani deplored the recurrence of insults to the Islamic sanctities, which he said are in contravention of the principles of human rights.

He said such hate crimes and offensive moves against the rights and values of more than two billion Muslims, which are committed against a backdrop of the Swedish police’s passive presence, will remain in the memory of the free-thinkers and truth-seekers of the world.

“From the viewpoint of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Swedish officials’ claims without practice in the condemnation of and opposition to desecration of the Holy Quran are not enough,” he underlined.

The spokesman also called on the Stockholm government to “seriously honor the fundamental principles of human rights and make efforts to promote morality and peaceful coexistence among religions through practical and effective measures” and responsibly satisfy the demands of Muslims and monotheists across the world.
