TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran on March 18 began to take the presidency of the 2024 session of the Conference on Disarmament for four weeks.

Iran’s ambassador to the UN offices in Geneva said the country’s presidency of the annual Conference on Disarmament has started on March 18.

Ali Bahraini said he has taken the helm at the meeting and begun bilateral negotiations with the purpose of reaching a consensual agenda.

Iran presides over the 2024 CD session in Geneva from March 18 to 29 and again from May 13 to 24.

The Conference on Disarmament (CD), was recognized by the Tenth Special Session on Disarmament of the United Nations General Assembly (SSOD-I) (1978) as a single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum of the international community.

The CD focuses on major multilateral arms limitation and disarmament agreements such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction (BWC), the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction (CWC) and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The Conference comprises 65 member states, including the five NPT nuclear-weapon states and 60 other states of key military significance.
