West Accused of Hypocrisy in Blocking UN Condemnation of Israeli Attack on Iranian Embassy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia's deputy UN ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy lambasted Western powers for double standards when efforts to condemn an attack on the consular section of the Iranian Embassy in Syria failed amidst opposition from the US, UK, and France.

In a recent development at the United Nations Security Council, efforts to condemn an attack on Iran's embassy compound in Syria have failed, with the United States, Britain, and France opposing a Russian-drafted statement for the condemnation.

During a meeting on Tuesday, diplomats from the US, France, and Britain expressed concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the events that occurred on Monday in Damascus, stating that there was no consensus among council members.

Russia's deputy UN ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy criticized the Western powers, stating in a post on X, "This serves as a clear illustration of the double standards employed by the Western 'troika' and their actual, rather than declarative, approach to legality and order in the international context."

Moscow has circulated a UN Security Council draft statement condemning Israel’s strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said on Wednesday.

"As a result of discussions and based on an agreement with our Iranian and Syrian colleagues, we circulated a Security Council draft statement to the media, which condemns what happened," he wrote on Telegram. "This is another opportunity to test the real intentions of our Western colleagues. We’ll see how work on the document goes," Polyansky added.

Polyansky noted that "the Security Council last discussed a similar incident 25 years ago, when a NATO strike destroyed the Chinese embassy building in Belgrade."

The Russian diplomat expressed regret that "the UN Secretariat failed to either condemn or make a direct assessment of" Israel’s actions. "The Western ‘trio’ was talking about anything but the airstrike on the diplomatic facility," he noted.

"(We) stressed that if the situation continues to escalate, the US, the United Kingdom and France would be to blame as they could not bring themselves to condemn Israel’s attack," the Russian first deputy permanent representative to the UN said.

Despite previous statements condemning attacks on diplomatic premises, the UN Security Council was unable to reach an agreement in this instance. Meanwhile, the European Union has condemned the strike, emphasizing the importance of respecting the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel, and calling for restraint from all parties involved.
