Italy Asks Iran to Show Restraint in Response to Israel

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Italy called on Iran to exercise self-restraint over a widely anticipated military response to an Israeli airstrike that claimed the lives of seven Iranian forces in the country’s diplomatic mission in Damascus on April 1.

In a telephone conversation on Friday evening, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani talked about the latest issues pertaining to the bilateral ties and regional developments.

In the conversation, Tajani called on Iran to show restraint in response to the Zionist regime’s fatal attack on the consular section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus.

He noted that after the Israeli attack on the Iranian diplomatic mission, Italy condemned it together with the European Union. He underscored that obviously, the diplomatic places should not be violated.

Tajani also stressed the need to expand bilateral relations with Iran.

He expressed hope that the relations between Tehran and Rome would be further increased, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

He further highlighted the importance of maritime security in the Red Sea, saying in light of Iran’s positive role in decreasing tensions, Italy calls on Tehran to keep to the same path and help establish lasting peace in the region.

For his part, Amirabdollahian referred to the historical ties between the two countries, expressing Iran’s readiness to expand its relations with Italy.

He noted that Iran has always been a positive part of regional developments and has paid dearly for the stability and security of the region.

Referring to the importance of maritime security, including in the Red Sea, the Iranian foreign minister said Tehran expects Italy to use the opportunity of presiding over the Group of Seven to try to immediately end the genocide and war crimes of the Israeli regime in Gaza and the West Bank in order to achieve inclusive regional security.

The two foreign ministers also stressed the importance of bilateral, regional and international consultations on various fields.
