UNGA to Pay Tribute to Late President of Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The United Nations General Assembly is preparing to hold a memorial service in honor of Iran's late President Ebrahim Raisi whom tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

Dennis Francis, President of the UN General Assembly, announced that the ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 30.

In a letter dated May 21, President Francis conveyed that Member States are encouraged to deliver regional group statements during the meeting, which will convene at 10 a.m. in the General Assembly Hall on May 30.

Earlier, on Thursday, President Francis paid tribute to the late Iranian president and foreign minister by signing a memorial book at the Islamic Republic’s mission in New York.

President Francis was accorded by Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, as he extended his sympathies to the Iranian government, nation, and the families of the victims.

The UN General Assembly had previously observed a minute of silence for the victims of the helicopter crash in Iran.

President Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and several senior officials, was returning from a ceremony to inaugurate a dam on Iran’s border with Republic of Azerbaijan when the tragic incident occurred in Varzaqan, northwestern Iran.
