Hourly Turnout in Iran Presidential Runoff on the Rise

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The number of voters in the ongoing runoff presidential election of Iran by midday Friday has increased in comparison with the corresponding period in the last week’s polls, an official said.

Speaking to reporters at 2:30 pm local time on Friday, the spokesperson for the Elections Headquarters of Iran said more voters have turned out for the ongoing presidential runoff compared to the same time in the first round, held on June 28.

Mohsen Eslami noted that the polling stations will continue to receive voters until 6 pm, though the Interior Ministry may extend the election period if necessary.

People are voting in around 59,000 polling stations across the country, he stated.

Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili, the two candidates with the highest number of votes, are facing off in the showdown.

A total of 24,535,185 votes were cast in the last week’s polls, translating into a turnout of 39.92%, as over 61,452,000 people were eligible to vote.

The election takes place a year ahead of schedule, as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi passed away in May.

A helicopter carrying President Raisi and his entourage crashed in northwestern mountainous forests on May 19, killing the president, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and six others.
