Iran Condemns Israel’s Use of White Phosphorus, Calls for OPCW Investigation
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran's UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, has condemned Israel for using white phosphorus munitions in its wars against Gaza and Lebanon and called for an international investigation.
Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, on Thursday accused Israel of committing war crimes by using white phosphorus bombs during its wars against Lebanon and Gaza.
Iravani urged the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to launch an international investigation into the violations by the "Zionist entity."
He reaffirmed Iran's commitment to supporting the OPCW’s independent and impartial work, stating, "We call for the full, effective, and non-discriminatory implementation of the Convention. Iran will spare no effort to realize the objectives of this vital instrument."
Turning to Syria, Iravani highlighted its compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention, noting that the country had destroyed its chemical weapons stockpiles and production facilities.
"The Syrian Arab Republic continues its constructive engagement with the OPCW, demonstrating its steadfast dedication to transparency and full compliance with its responsibilities," he said.
Iravani detailed Syria's efforts, mentioning the submission of three reports over the past three months, participation in the 28th round of consultations with the OPCW’s Declaration Assessment Team, and provision of requested information to address unresolved issues.
He also noted Syria's decision to extend its agreement with the OPCW and the United Nations Office for Project Services by another six months.
"It is essential to recognize the significant progress in Syria’s cooperation with the OPCW and ensure such developments are evaluated fairly, without politicization or bias," Iravani emphasized.
He also called on the OPCW to maintain neutrality, professionalism, and an evidence-based approach in its operations. "We support continued constructive dialogue between Syria and the OPCW to address any outstanding issues and achieve a comprehensive resolution. This process must be guided by transparency, accountability, and impartiality," he stated.
Human Rights Watch, shortly after the October 2023 attack, verified footage showing Israeli forces deploying white phosphorus munitions in Gaza and Lebanon. Videos documented their use over Gaza City port and rural areas near Lebanon’s border.
Additional evidence included white phosphorus shells with matching manufacturing codes positioned alongside Israeli artillery in Sderot, near the Gaza Strip, in an October 9 image.
