Global Resistance Mounts against Renaming Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Trump administration’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" has sparked widespread international rejection, with Mexico and other nations vowing to continue using the globally recognized name.

World

Despite US President Donald Trump's executive order to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico, international acceptance of the change remains elusive.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed the move, affirming, "The Gulf of Mexico is a name recognized by the United Nations." She reiterated that her country and the global community would uphold the name’s historical and navigational significance.

Trump described the renaming as a tribute to the Gulf’s vital economic contributions to the United States, citing its oil production, fisheries, and tourism appeal. His order also instructed US agencies to update all references to reflect the new name.

However, the renaming has drawn criticism abroad. British authorities have no plans to adopt the Gulf of America name, stating they will continue using Gulf of Mexico unless the change gains global traction, which experts view as improbable.

Observers highlight the challenges of renaming internationally recognized geographic features, pointing to long-standing disputes like the Sea of Japan/East Sea debate or the contested naming of the South China Sea. These conflicts underline the deep historical and political ties embedded in place names.

"The Gulf of Mexico is not just an American landmark," a diplomatic source stated, "It is a shared regional and global resource, with its name carrying centuries of heritage and maritime importance."

While Trump's administration asserts the change honors American greatness, the broader global community has so far declined to follow suit, emphasizing the difficulty of achieving worldwide consensus on such alterations.
