Meloni said her government is ready to play a constructive role in stabilizing Gaza after the latest ceasefire agreement between the Israeli regime and the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.
“Clearly, if the plan is implemented, Italy’s recognition of Palestine will certainly be closer,” Meloni said on the sidelines of the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in Egypt, according to the ANSA news agency.
She emphasized that Italy seeks to support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state while continuing its humanitarian assistance to the besieged population of Gaza, which has endured relentless bombardment and destruction under Israeli occupation forces.
Meloni said Italy stands ready to contribute to the stabilization of Gaza, including deploying Carabinieri forces if required under a United Nations resolution.
“Italy is ready to do its part. It’s a great opportunity. It’s a historic day. I’m proud that Italy is here,” she stated.
Last week, the Israeli regime and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a plan to halt attacks on Gaza, exchange prisoners, and withdraw Israeli forces from the enclave. The initial phase of the deal took effect Friday.
The next stage envisions establishing a new governing body in Gaza and deploying a multinational force.
Earlier Monday, Israel began releasing Palestinian detainees as Hamas freed all 20 living Israeli captives held in Gaza.
Since October 2023, the Israeli regime’s military campaign has massacred more than 67,800 Palestinians, the overwhelming majority women and children, leaving Gaza in ruins and unfit for human life.
