Kiev Residents Urged to Temporarily Leave Capital amid Heating Shutdown

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko asked residents to temporarily leave the capital due to a heating shutdown following Russian strikes on energy infrastructure.

Klitschko made the appeal on Tuesday after the city lost access to heating due to Moscow’s attacks, France 24 reported.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky previously stated that Qatar’s embassy was damaged in Moscow’s overnight attack on Kiev and called for a “clear reaction” from the international community.

The Ukrainian Interior Minister also reported that at least 20 residential buildings were destroyed in the overnight attacks.

Reuters sources indicated that the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on the attacks on Kiev on Monday.

Meanwhile, as diplomatic efforts surrounding the Ukraine war intensify, Paris hosted an unprecedented meeting last Tuesday with dozens of European leaders and US representatives.

According to French sources, a primary goal of the Paris meeting was to coordinate between European commitments and US security assurances. Discussions also covered monitoring a potential ceasefire, responding to breaches, the framework for an international force, long-term security commitments, and principles for peace negotiations with Russia to end the war, which began in March 2022.

The Ukraine war emerged from Moscow’s concerns about NATO’s eastward expansion, which Western nations reportedly disregarded.

Russia launched its Ukraine operation on March 24, 2022, and the US and NATO members have escalated the conflict by providing extensive military aid to Kiev.  This includes supplying Ukraine with heavy weaponry, prioritizing confrontation over de-escalation, and implementing over 30,000 sanctions against Russia.
