US Not Willing to Get Final Nuclear Deal: Iranian MP
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian lawmaker said the US government does not want the disputes over Iran’s peaceful nuclear program come to an end because Washington is seeking to use the issue as a leverage against the Islamic Republic.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi commented on the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the world powers in New York aimed at resolving the decade-long standoff over Tehran’s nuclear issue.
“Americans do not want Iran’s nuclear issue to be brought to an end so that a final agreement is secured because they are seeking to use the issue as a leverage against the Islamic Republic,” he noted.
“We are determined to safeguard our (nuclear) rights and will not step back,” Boroujerdi said.
“The US excessive demands are not acceptable and if Washington is keen to settle the disputes, it should cooperate and accede to a deal with Iran,” he added.
Nuclear negotiators representing Iran and the six world powers (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) started a fresh round of talks on Tehran’s civilian nuclear work in New York on Friday.
The negotiations are expected to run until at least September 26 on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) on November 24, 2013, signed an interim nuclear deal in the Swiss city of Geneva.
Based on the interim deal, the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities.
In July, Tehran and the six countries agreed to extend negotiations until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal.
