Iran Favors Negotiations on JCPOA Revival: FM
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran is committed to holding negotiations on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said.
In a meeting with his Swiss counterpart on the sidelines of the Davos Summit on Wednesday, Amirabdollahian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to “the course of negotiations” on saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
He said the initiative for the JCPOA revival put forward by the sultan of Oman “is still on the table”, highlighting the significance of Switzerland’s support for the pertinent negotiations.
Hailing the constructive cooperation between Tehran and Bern within the framework of a road map to interaction, Amirabdollahian called for closer coordination on holding the next meeting of the Iran-Switzerland Joint Cooperation Commission in Tehran.
He also expressed Iran’s readiness for closer cooperation between the private companies of the two nations.
For his part, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis congratulated Iran on joining BRICS.
Highlighting the importance of constant dialogue with Iran on bilateral and regional issues, he said Switzerland is prepared to continue consultations and hold diplomatic and expert meetings with Iran in various fields.
The United States returned its sanctions against Iran in 2018 after leaving the JCPOA, an agreement between the Islamic Republic and world countries that would lift sanctions in exchange for some voluntary changes in Tehran's nuclear energy program.
Bowing under American pressure, the EU has been toeing the US's sanction line against Iran ever since Washington's departure from the deal.
