Iran's Judiciary Chief Blasts West for Endorsing Israeli Crimes

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The issue of human rights has turned into a tool for the world powers to meet their objectives, Iran’s judiciary chief stressed, referring to the West’s backing for the Israeli atrocities against Palestinians as a sign of disregard for the human rights.

“The hegemonic powers want the human rights not for the sake of human rights, but for their own inauspicious goals,” Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani said, addressing the Islamic Human Rights conference here in Tehran on Tuesday.

Disgusted by the Israeli military offensive against the Gaza Strip, the senior Iranian official said, “The usurper and fake Zionist regime has left more than 10,000 killed and injured in Gaza. It demolishes hospitals, mosques and schools.”

He noted that Tel Aviv is receiving support from the self-proclaimed advocates of human rights, particularly the US and the European states, which have already imposed unilateral sanctions against some countries under the pretext of human rights violation.

The Gaza Strip –the small enclave of 41 kilometers long with 1.8 million Muslim residents- has been under Israeli attacks since July 8. Death toll from more than four weeks of onslaught on Palestinians has exceeded 1,800 with more than 9,000 others reported injured.

Meantime, reports suggest that Israel has been routinely shelling and bombing hospitals, mosques, schools and private homes in the besieged enclave.

Amid global criticism of Israeli offensive on Gaza, Pentagon said on July 30 the US had granted Israel access to a special stockpile of ammunition, believed to be 40mm grenades and 120mm mortar rounds.

Later on August 1, the US House approved $225 million to fund Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system.

Since 1976 Israel has been the highest recipient of US foreign aid in the world. The congressional aid comes to about $1.8 billion a year in military aid and $1.2 billion in economic aid, plus another $1 billion or so in miscellaneous grants, mostly in military supplies, from various US agencies.
