Ayatollah Larijani Reappointed as Iran’s Judiciary Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has reappointed Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani for another 5-year term as the country’s judiciary chief.

 

Based on the article 157 of the Constitution, Imam Khamenei reappointed Larijani as the judiciary chief for another five years, appreciating his efforts and wishing success for him in his “crucial responsibility”.

In his statement, Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized that establishing suitable mechanisms to ensure easy access justice, fighting corruption, and providing social security could bring prosperity for the judicial system and help realization of the Islamic justice.

The Article 157 of the Iranian Constitution says in order to fulfil the responsibilities of the judiciary power in all the matters concerning judiciary, administrative and executive areas, the Leader shall appoint a just Mujtahid (A religious scholar capable of interpreting sharia laws) well versed in judiciary affairs and possessing prudence and administrative abilities as the head of the judiciary power for a period of five years who shall be the highest judicial authority.

The 54-year-old Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani assumed office on 30 June 2009 whose predecessor was Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi.

He is the fifth judiciary Chief appointed since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.
