IEC: 83.4% of Afghan Presidential Election Ballots Audited

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced that 83.4 percent of votes from the runoff election have been audited since the beginning of the audit and recount process.

IEC spokesman, Noor Mohammad Noor, told reporters that the audit teams have managed to audit 19,047 ballot boxes out of 22,821 boxes so far.

Noor further added that the commission is expecting to take decision regarding ballots of 5,000 which have been audited, as part of the validation and invalidation process.

He said the commission is expecting to finalize the audit process within the next few days by completing the audit process on remaining 3,781 ballot boxes.

The election audit process continues in the absence of observers from Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai camps, Khaama Press reported.

Noor said the number of international observers has increased and currently each audit team is being supervised by one international observer.

The election audit process was expected to conclude by the end of this month. However, the process was hampered on numerous occasions due to altercations between the parties involved in the audit process.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan Jan Kubis has said that the presidential vote audit will conclude on 10th of September.

Kubis during a meeting with President Karzai last week, said it will not be possible to conclude the audit process until the second of September and it is expected that the process will end on 10th of September.
