Iran’s President Urges Expansion of Tehran-Algiers Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday called for the development of economic ties between Tehran and Algiers, saying the current level of ties is not at all acceptable given the existing potentials.

“The economic ties between the two countries, particularly given the appropriate capacities available, are not at an acceptable level,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal here in Tehran.

“The private and public sectors of both countries should make more efforts to boost the level of Tehran-Algiers economic relations in the post-sanctions era,” the Iranian president said, referring to the upcoming termination of anti-Iran sanctions as per a recent nuclear deal finalized by Tehran and world powers.

Agriculture, mines, technology, science, tourism, and culture are among the fields where Iran and Algeria can enhance their mutual cooperation, Rouhani added.

“Your trip to Tehran and the two countries’ joint economic commission due to be held in Algeria in the coming days will definitely be a good move toward the expansion of ties between the two sides,” President Rouhani stressed.

Sellal, for his part, hailed the existing capacities for development of ties between Iran and Algeria, and said that the scheduled joint economic commission would help operationalize the capacities.

Earlier in the day, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had also noted that the current level of collaborations between Iran and Algeria is not desirable.

In his Tuesday meeting with Sellal, the Leader expressed the hope that bilateral trade ties between the two countries would be enhanced with Sellal’s trip to Tehran, the upcoming joint commission, and a planned visit by Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri to the North African country.
