Iran, Serbia Eager to Enhance Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Top officials from Iran and Serbia explored avenues for the expansion of Tehran-Belgrade relations with an eye to the potential offered by an upcoming joint economic commission for closer trade ties.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and visiting President of the National Assembly of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met in Tehran on Tuesday.

Highlighting the good grounds for stronger ties with Tehran following the termination of anti-Iran sanctions under a comprehensive nuclear deal with world powers, Zarif welcomed the presence of Serbian ministers in Iran for a joint economic commission meeting.

He noted that plans will be weighed up during the commission meeting to remove the obstacles in the way of economic relations between Tehran and Belgrade.

Iran welcomes the promotion of cooperation between the state-run and private sectors of the two countries and the settlement of monetary and banking problems, Zarif added.

For her part, Gojkovic said plans for the attendance of several Serbian ministers in the joint economic commission meeting signifies its great significance for the European country.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

The promising prospect of trade with Iran has prompted major European countries to explore the market potential in the populous Middle East nation.
