Rouhani Congratulates Newly-Elected Tanzanian President
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated John Magufuli on his victory in Tanzanian presidential elections.
In his congratulatory message, President Rouhani hoped mutual ties between Iran and the Eastern African country would further flourish in political, economic and cultural areas during his rule.
Rouhani wished good health and success for Mr Magufuli , and prosperity for the Tanzanian nation.
Magufuli, a 56-year old chemist, gained 58 percent of the votes to become the 5th Tanzanian president in one of the most competitive and unpredictable polls in the country’s history. He was sworn in on 5 November 2015.
Magufuli's closest rival in the election was Edward Lowassa, a former prime minister and opposition leader, who was trounced getting 40 percent of the votes. The incumbent president, Jakaya Kikwete, was ineligible to be elected to a third term due to term limits.
