Iran’s FM Due in Moscow Friday for Trilateral Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A Russian Foreign Ministry official said Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will travel to Moscow Friday for three-way talks with his Russian and Syrian counterparts on the going crisis in Syria.

“Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif is arriving in Russia,” the official told the Tass news agency on the condition of anonymity on Wednesday.

“On October 28, he will hold talks with Sergey Lavrov,” he added.

Also, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi confirmed late on Wednesday that Zarif will pay an official visit to Moscow on Friday to hold talks with Lavrov and Walid Muallem, the Syrian foreign minister, on the latest developments in Syria.

He added that the Iranian minister will also hold a one-to-one meeting with his Russian counterpart.

In mid-October, the top Iranian and Russian diplomats held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of multilateral talks on Syria in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
