Commander: IRGC Prepared to Play Active Role to Boost Iran’s Economy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) underlined that his forces are fully prepared to contribute to the development of the country’s economy with their “enormous potential”.

“Under the status quo, the Basij (volunteer forces) has enormous potential in diverse economic arenas, particularly in the Resistance Economy,” Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said on Friday.

He stressed that both the Basij and the IRGC forces are ready to “play an active and influential role” in the country’s economy as soon as they receive a demand from the administration.

His comments came after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in a proclamation on February 19 outlined a series of general policies to boost the country’s economy and lower its vulnerabilities, known as the Resistance Economy.

The proclamation, laying out a grand plan for the Resistance Economy in Iran, has been issued after consultations with the country’s Expediency Council and based upon the Clause 1 of Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution.

The IRGC has on various occasions expressed preparedness to help the administration deal with the economic issues more effectively.

Less than a month after taking the office in September 2013, President Hassan Rouhani had praised the IRGC for its prominent role in countering plots against the country, and called on it to help ease the burden on his administration by carrying out big national projects.

“I ask the IRGC to assist the administration in countering sanctions and tackling commodity smuggling,” the Iranian president said at the time.
