Iranian Speaker Sympathizes with Afghan People over Landslide Tragedy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in a massage on Saturday expressed his sympathy with Afghan nation and government over the disastrous landslide in Badakhshan province that has killed hundreds of people in a mountainous village.

In message to Afghanistan's House Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, Larijani extended his condolences to the neighboring Afghanistan’s Muslim government and nation and survivors of the tragic incident.

The Iranian parliament speaker also sent another message to Afghan Senate Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar, offering his deepest sympathy over the death of Afghan people.

Hundreds of people have been killed and more than 2,000 are missing after a landslide smashed into a village in a mountainous area of northern Afghan province of Badakhshan.

Triggered by heavy rain, the side of a mountain collapsed into the village in Argo district at around 11 am as people were trying to recover their belongings and livestock after a smaller landslip hit their homes a few hours earlier.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by difficult conditions due to a week of heavy rain. Seasonal rains and spring snow melt have caused heavy destruction across large swathes of northern Afghanistan, killing more than 100 people.
