TEHRAN (Tasnim) - At least nine people were killed and 51 others wounded in overnight shelling and a suicide bomb attack in Iraq's western province, provincial police and medical sources said on Wednesday.

A suicide bomber blew up his explosive vest at a joint police and army checkpoint in the city of Heet, some 160 km west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, leaving three soldiers and a policeman killed, and six soldiers wounded, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, airstrikes, artillery and mortar rounds pounded the besieged city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, killing five people and wounding 45 others, a medical source from the city hospital said.

Iraq is currently witnessing some of its worst violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll in years.
