Iran, US, EU Continue Deputy-Level N. Talks for 2nd Day

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Delegates representing Iran, the US and the European Union held another trilateral meeting on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program for the second consecutive day in Switzerland on Tuesday.

The negotiating parties held the first meeting in Geneva on Monday afternoon, which lasted for five hours.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi, who leads the Iranian delegation, said on Monday that the first day of negotiations was held “in a positive and constructive atmosphere.”

The American team is led by the US Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns and Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, while Deputy EU Foreign Policy Chief Helga Schmid attends the trilateral talks on behalf of the European body.

The Iranian negotiating team is also set to hold a couple of other bilateral meetings with diplomats from Russia, France and Germany in the coming days.

The separate bilateral talks between Iran and members of the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are aimed at narrowing differences ahead of a high-level meeting among the political directors of the seven nations, slated for June 16-20 in Vienna.

The upcoming negotiations in Austria are aimed at drafting a comprehensive deal to resolve the decade-long standoff over Tehran's peaceful nuclear energy program.
