Iran Eyes Expanded Ties with Uruguay

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a message to his Uruguayan counterpart expressed the hope for the enhancement of relations between Tehran and Montevideo.

In a Sunday message to Uruguay’s President Jose Mujica, President Rouhani congratulated the Latin American government and nation on its Independence Day, which falls on August 25.

Rouhani also hoped that joint efforts by the two countries’ officials would contribute to the continuation and expansion of friendly ties between the two nations that would in turn serve the interests of both nations in all fields.

The promotion of all-out cooperation with the Latin American countries has been among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy over the past few years.

In September 2013 and less than a month after taking the office, President Hassan Rouhani stressed Tehran's willingness to boost cooperation between Iran and Latin America.

Iran has forged hundreds of agreements with Latin American nations in recent years.
