5 Killed in Suicide Attack at Army Checkpoint in Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A suicide bomber killed himself and four soldiers when he detonated a car bomb at a Yemeni army checkpoint in southeastern province of Hadramout on Tuesday, a provincial security official told Xinhua.

"Four soldiers from the special security forces died after a huge bombing carried out by suspected al-Qaeda suicide bomber on a key military checkpoint in Qattan region of Hadramout province," the provincial security source said on condition of anonymity.

"Those killed in the suicide attack include two officers and some six soldiers sustained serious injuries," the Yemeni security source said.

An army commander in the region said that "heavy armed clashes took place after a suicide bomber riding explosive-laden car blew it on the checkpoint at around 9:30 a.m. local time today."

A number of suspected al-Qaeda assailants engaged in armed confrontations with the army troops stationed on the same checkpoint after the explosion, leaving three terrorists killed on the spot, the army commander said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the violent incident, but Yemeni military officials blamed militants of the Yemen-based al-Qaeda offshoot for a series of assassinations and armed attacks, mostly in the country's southern parts.
