Iran Warns Against Negative Consequences of US-Led Strikes in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry censured the US-led military action in Syria as a violation of the Arab country’s sovereignty, and cautioned that it would adversely affect the international developments.

“The US move to attack Syria, which was performed out of step with the established international mechanisms, amounts to the violation of that country’s sovereignty and of the international law and principles, and would undoubtedly have much negative consequences in the international arena,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said on Tuesday.

She also described the US-led operation as another “interfering measure” that would only complicate the situation further across the region.

Her comments came after he US, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates began launching airstrikes on the targets of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group in Syria on Monday.

Using a mix of manned aircraft -fighter jets and bombers- plus Tomahawk cruise missiles, the strikes were part of the expanded military campaign that US President Barack Obama authorized nearly two weeks ago in order to disrupt and destroy the ISIL militants.
