Georgia Highlights Significance of Progress in Iran Nuclear Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Georgia welcomed progress reached by Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council plus Germany) in talks over Tehran’s nuclear program, and called it 'an important step' toward world peace and stability.

“We believe that it (progress in nuclear talks) will be an important step toward lasting peace and stability in the region and the world,” Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement released on the extension of talks between Iran and the world powers.

In the statement, Tbilisi welcomed the agreement reached by the negotiating parties on November 24, 2014 to extend the Joint Plan of Action (JPOA) until June 30, 2015.

The ministry also voiced the country’s support for the negotiation process, and expressed the hope that the parties would achieve an agreement by the deadline set.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) wrapped up seven days of intensive nuclear talks in Vienna on November 24 without securing a long-awaited comprehensive deal but decided to extend talks on Tehran’s peaceful atomic program for seven more months.

The first round of talks after the extension of negotiation deadline kicked off in Geneva on Monday with bilateral talks between Iran and the US.

Representatives from Iran and the Sextet (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) are slated to convene on Wednesday.
