Iran Ready to Encourage World against Violence, Extremism: Zarif

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif voiced Tehran’s determination to cooperate with friendly countries in their fight against terrorism, and added that Iran is ready to ally the world against violence and extremism.

“As the rotating president of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Iran is ready to seriously pursue the formation of a global front against violence and extremism, as proposed by our country's president (at the UN),” Zarif said in a meeting with the Burundian Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation Laurent Kavakure in Burundi’s capital of Bujumbura.

He made the remarks in a reference to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s WAVE (World Against Violence and Extremism) proposal approved by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 2013.

Iran attracted attention as one of the first countries that anticipated a growing trend in extremist moves in the world.

Addressing the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly, Rouhani called for a coalition for enduing peace all around the globe instead of the ineffective coalitions for war in various parts of the world.

Kavakure, for his part, briefed his Iranian counterpart on the activities of terrorist groups in Africa, and highlighted the necessity for collective and mutual efforts and cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
