TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said the ISIL terrorist group has been defeated in Iraq as it is tormented by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

ISIL Tormented by Iran: IRGC Commander

“When the ISIL emerged in Iraq, no country offered assistance to destroy it, but Iran rushed to help the Iraqi nation to annihilate the ISIL,” Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said in a cultural ceremony on Saturday.

He said the world, even US President Barack Obama, was stunned to see the ISIL suffering defeat in Iraq despite years of planning.

“Iran has become a torment for the ISIL,” the commander noted.

Iran has constantly rejected reports on its military presence in Iraq, saying that its assistance is confined to advisory help. Several Iraqi officials have also confirmed that Iran has no military troops in the Arab country.

The so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant is a terrorist group believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

The terrorist groups made swift advances in northern and western Iraq over summer 2014, after capturing swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of the ISIL offensive and resulted in the freedom of many towns and villages.
