10 Police Killed in Taliban Attack on Police Station in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - At least 10 police died and eight others were wounded after Taliban gunmen and suicide bombers attacked a police station in the eastern Afghan province of Logar on Tuesday, sources said.

Four attackers armed with guns and suicide vests were involved in the attack against the provincial police headquarters that occurred at around midday in the provincial capital of Pul-e-Alam.

"The attackers arrived in a car. One militant detonated an explosive vest in the front gate. Three others succeeded in entering into the building. Two other militants were killed during gunfight and explosion in the building's yard," the source told Xinhua anonymously.

"The last bomber made his way into the dining hall of the facility where scores of police officials were eating their launch. The attacker set off his suicide jacket at the gallery of the hall, leaving casualties."

Eight policemen were wounded in the blasts and firing, the source said, adding the death toll may further rise as several wounded were in critical condition.

The casualties were shifted to a nearby hospital in the city, 60 km south of Kabul.

The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban has intensified attacks with a string of bombings and armed attacks over the past couple of months.

Afghan security forces have assumed the full security charges from NATO and US forces after the NATO-led troops switched from combat to support role since Jan. 1 this year.
