U-23 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship: Iran Beats Philippines

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran started its campaign in the 2015 Under-23 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship with a win over the Philippines on Friday.

The Iranian team defeated the host 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20) in Pool A at the Philsports Arena in Manila.

Iran captain Mahsa Saberi led her team with 16 points while Mahsa Kadkhoda added 14.

Alyssa Valdez led the Philippines with 31 points while Jaja Santiago had 13.

Iran head coach Abbas Barghi said his players had it in their minds that they could win, and they did.

“The players just think that they should win the match,” Barghi said.

Iran will play Kazakhstan on Sunday.

The Asian Under-23 Volleyball championship serves as the qualifying round for the 2015 FIVB Under-23 Volleyball World Championship in Ankara, Turkey.
