Foreign Militants' Exit, Basis of Political Solution to Syria Crisis: UN Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said foreign militants should leave Syria as a requirement for political resolution of the Arab country's crisis.

Safeguarding Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, departure of foreign militants and respecting the rights of all Syrians should be the basis of any political solution for Syria, de Mistura said in a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

He warned against the rising threat of terrorism in Syria and underlining the futility of military solutions, called for decisive action to politically resolve the crisis in the Arab country.

Amir Abdollahian, for his part, highlighted Iran's stances in support of the Syrian nation and government.

He further said all sides are well aware today that the only way out of the crisis in Syria is through political means, adding that Tehran believes any change in Syria should be made by the country's people and through democratic arrangements.

The Iranian diplomat also underscored the need for serious and non-selective fight against terrorism in the region.

Syria has been gripped by a devastating crisis since March 2011 when foreign-backed terrorists began their deadly campaign in the country.

New figures show that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives in Syria last year alone.

The UN says over 7.2 million people have been internally displaced, while more than three million others have fled to other countries due to the intolerable conditions caused by the crisis.
