Iran, Japan Mull Nuclear Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s president and Japan’s prime minister in a meeting in New York explored avenues for expansion of relations, as in the nuclear industry.

President Hassan Rouhani and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe met on the sidelines of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Sunday.

The Iranian chief executive said a final nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) has provided an opportunity for the enhancement of relations between Iran and Japan.

“We can cooperate in fields of transportation, environment, culture and science as well as modern sciences, including the field of peaceful nuclear energy,” President Rouhani noted.

The Japanese prime minister, for his part, voiced Tokyo’s readiness to work in cooperation with Tehran in the scientific and cultural fields, environment, medicine and nuclear safety.

Abe also noted that Japan is eager to cooperate with Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) on the careful implementation of a nuclear deal the two sides have finalized in July.

Back on July 14, Iran and the six powers finalized the text of a lasting agreement on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program in Vienna.

The 159-page deal, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), will have the whole nuclear-related sanctions against Iran terminated after taking effect.
