Kurds Cannot Unilaterally Decide on Syria’s Federalization: Moscow

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The issue of the Syrian federalization cannot be decided upon unilaterally by the Syrian Kurds, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Thursday.

On Wednesday, media reports revealed Syrian Kurds' plan to declare the federalization of the northern Syria.

"I think that this could be a position for the negotiations, but not a unilateral decision. It is necessary to negotiate with other actors — on the ceasefire, on the political process, to create a new constitution, which may provide for a new political order in Syria," Bogdanov told RIA Novosti.

He noted, however, that “it is all linked to the establishment of the sustainable and inclusive political process within the intra-Syrian dialogue.”

Meanwhile, the Syrian government also warned against any attempt to undermine Syria’s unity and territorial integrity under whatever names.

The government “warns any party against attempting to undermine the territorial integrity of Syria and the unity of its people under whatever names,” the source said in the statement.

The Swiss city of Geneva currently hosts proximity talks between the Syrian opposition and the government's delegation to put an end to the deadly civil war.
